In 2008, Cartly Heitlinger was a freshman in college doing what most of us do in her situation – studying a subject they don’t like in order to get a degree they do. So she started a blog as part distraction, part creative outlet, writing about things she was interested in – study breaks and bows on shoes, to name a few.
So what does this mean for you, the blogger? Many bloggers are transitioning into “media hubs” – a place where many different stories and opinions and ideas and media are collected and disseminated. What you can do about it: Don’t write off guest-blogging altogether – it still has its place. Are you scared?

The goal of the book was to summarise much of the writing that Chris and I had been blogging on our blogs – to present bloggers, particularly those at the start of their journey, with a logically ordered guide to blogging for profit.

As the word came out of my mouth I found myself almost involuntarily shuddering because I know that there’s a lot of mixed feelings among bloggers about the network right now and I half expect that we’ll get our fair share of ‘I’ve given up on Facebook’ comments on these posts. In 2008, when I started my travel blog, I could count the number of travel blogs on one hand. Many travel bloggers start blogging months before they actually start traveling. One of the mistakes most beginner travel bloggers make is that they write generic articles. Write a story that connects with your reader.
Perhaps one of the most powerful ways of exposing your writing to a new group of people is to put some of your best content on other peoples blogs – and not your own. Repeat Posts – build a relationship with the readers of the blog that you’re writing for my writing regularly for it.
I first discovered the joys of blogging in 2007 and I launched my first blog in 2008. What right do I have to blog, I thought, with all these amazing bloggers around me? I started spending more time checking feedburner than writing blog posts. Use Google Analytics, and ignore the built in stats counter on WordPress and Blogger.
I remember back to early 2008, when I’d just started blogging, that even though I had great ambitions, my knowledge, expertise, and confidence as a blogger was sorely lacking. In the end, I realized that my own fear of going all in on a single idea was keeping me from being successful as a blogger. Holding back.
