Our concept of intellectual property was centuries in the future. Others railed that penny dreadfuls debased prose, corrupted youth, and caused crime. They identified material fit for reproduction and offered favored printers the exclusive right to copy it— “copyright.” But early copyrights were fantasies. Culture belonged to everyone.
