What a 2022 it has been for the world and for my business! Was it just as wild as mine? From being interviewed for a Business Insider article to sharing my thoughts in the Globe and Mail on hand pain, I am amazed by all the opportunities I’ve had lately. Another accomplishment I’ve had because of my writing is landing some high-paying and notable clients this year.
We’ve previously explored what I called “the end of the trade publishing concept” , which stems from the now wide-open opportunity to publish available to anybody with a computer and something to deliver as a book. It feels like we may have reached a new benchmark: admittedly a very fuzzy one. But it looks like it has become very difficult, bordering on impossible, for a commercial entity to make money consistently publishing new titles.
When I think back on 2022, one theme stands out for me: Burnout. I know I’m not alone in that. Talk of “quiet quitting” abounds, as does peoples’ general feelings of ennui toward work. My issue was over-booking. I spent the first half traveling for conferences and speaking gigs (sometimes with trips twice in the same month, yikes) and the rest of the time doing client work, focusing on growing Content Remix (our podcast repurposing service), and doing a bit of consulting work.
Do you ever wonder how others edit their writing ? Me, too. So, picture my delight when I came across a fabulous example of revision … By a bestselling author! This revision is more fundamental than cutting a couple of words or ironing out a few typos. The final version is longer, more vivid , and more dramatic than the rough draft. Want to know more?

Finding and enrolling in the best creative writing courses in India has been more difficult than I thought. At least it used to be, seven years ago when I had just dived into freelance writing. I wanted to hone my skills and practice fiction writing too, which is when I started looking for creative writing courses online. For a while, I even considered getting an MA in creative writing in India.
Most bloggers, regardless of their monetization methods, want to hear back from their audience. Whether you are providing services or selling courses, your blog’s “Contact us” page is your main.
Have you been hearing a lot about AI and AI writing tools? ChatGPT is here, and everyone is going bonkers on Twitter. Wherever you look, it’s on Youtube, Medium, and Google! The age of an AI writing tool is here, and as freelance writers, we need to EMBRACE this new way of writing. I know many writers are thinking this is the end of freelance writing, but it’s not.
I’ve been using ChatGPT a lot recently. But for the most part, I haven’t been using it to write content or copy. I’ve been using it as a brainstorming buddy and an information-cruncher. As an example, here’s how I’ve been using ChatGPT to help me update the coaching page on my website. I used to do a lot of one-on-one coaching with freelancers. Then I paused for a while.
As I look back over the last 12+ years of my writing business, I see ebbs and flows. There were big projects and small ones. There were good clients and not-so-good clients. With each experience, I came further along the learning curve of being a business owner. It was in 2022 when I was physically, mentally, and spiritually well enough to take big chances.
In this new era of AI-powered writing tools , I’ve been thinking a lot lately about quality when it comes to writing. Are we generally satisfied with “done, and good enough”? Or are there still publications and organizations out there dedicated to producing top-notch, highly researched, funny, culturally relevant writing? The latter is a LOT of work.
I was very pleased with my post of last week, about how my friend Ed Rogoff could possibly self-publish a book about health called “Scary Diagnosis” better than it would be delivered to the public by a professional publisher. I put it up. My subscribers got it by email. And then Google put a big bright red WARNING screen on my site saying “malware here, don’t go!

Searching for the benefits of blogging? You’re in the right place. Many years ago, blogging was seen as an online journal or diary where you could jot down your thoughts.
If you are one of the 63% of Americans living paycheck to paycheck, then budgeting is a must. Fortunately, adding a side hustle like freelance writing, can help you live more freely (travel around the world) and sustainably. But in the beginning, when you’re learning the ropes, getting consistent (high-quality, paying) writing jobs can be a little more difficult to come by.

At any given time, I’m juggling way more than a handful of clients. Right now, I have 10 recurring monthly clients, and 3 I do ad-hoc work for. I admit, it *does* seem like I do a lot of work. I know a lot of freelancers who only write one or two pieces a week, and that’s totally cool too. There’s no one-size-fits-all. But I’ve been doing this for 8 years now (my freelance anniversary is coming up this month!

Getting looks but no sales? Let’s turn those window shoppers into buyers – and at a high rate. Use conversion rate optimization to get the most of every dollar spent on PPC. Hit the sweet spot for what persuades the greatest number of your visitors to take action. My gut tells me the reason for this is MOST companies are too caught up in the “business as usual syndrome”, and they rarely take a second to stop and think about really focusing on conversion optimization.

AI is a force multiplier for great writers. It took us a long time to say that. Two years of experimenting with a host of generative writing tools — GPT-3, Copy.ai, Writer, Jasper, and ChatGPT. But our decision is: it’s an advantage. And because we think it’s an advantage, we’re incorporating it — in thoughtful, measured ways — into the work we do for ourselves and for customers also interested in experimenting.
