Who’s opinion should you listen to? Always a tough question. Right now there are plenty of conflicting views when it comes to the future impact of AI on the careers of writers and copywriters. At one extreme, there are those who claim AI is just hype, a passing fad, and that it will never replace human writers. At the other extreme, some copywriters are worried their jobs will be completely obliterated by AI within the next few years.
AI is the big thing right now. And while tools like ChatGPT are incredible in many ways, there’s one thing they’re really, really bad at. Emotion. Bots don’t do emotion. And they can’t feel empathy for others.

Today’s post is by regular contributor Susan DeFreitas ( @manzanitafire ), an award-winning author, editor, and book coach. She is hosting a free masterclass for novelists on Sept. 22, Excellent Openings. When I help my clients prepare the pitch materials for their novel, it’s not just the query and synopsis we focus on—it’s their opening pages. Because it doesn’t matter how snappy that query letter is, or how promising that synopsis reads: If the opening pages of the story itself don’t suck the

The reality of the current web is that JavaScript is everywhere. Most websites use some kind of JavaScript to add interactivity and improve user experience. Yet most of the JavaScript used on so many websites won’t impact SEO at all.
Consider storyscaping. At the end of the day, all authors are storytellers. Whether you’re writing a technical manual, an autobiography, a novel, or a self-help book, how expertly you convey your message matters. Available on Amazon I’ve always loved storytelling, from the time I repeated fairy tales to my siblings to the time I began writing magazine editorials and editing books.

In two months, I’ll be celebrating the 10-year anniversary of leaving my full-time job (I worked in marketing/PR for a non-profit straight out of college) to pursue freelance writing *totally on my own.* Ten years is a long time. I don’t think we often give ourselves time to pause, look back, and say, “Whoa. There went 3,560 days. Look at everything I accomplished in that time frame.
Client companies are already seeing it… and they don’t like it. Freelance and in-house writers are relying too heavily on AI tools like ChatGPT to write their sales copy, content, and social media updates. The result? When you use the same tool as every other writer, you begin to churn out writing that feels generic, flat… and the same as everything else out there.
Photo by Almos Bechtold on Unsplash Today’s post is by author, editor and book coach Sharon Skinner. Theme is a critical element of story, but it is more than just the point you are making. Theme can be used to deepen reader experience, add subplots, increase conflict, ramp up tension, and heighten the overall narrative. It is the sweet syrup that drips and runs into all the nooks and crannies of a deeply layered story.

As humans, we experience the world through our senses. We see the sun rise, listen to music, taste chocolate cake, smell the spring air, and feel the comfort of a loved one’s touch. AI tools can’t do that. They can sift through data and find examples of humans describing these senses, but they have no first-hand sensory experience. That’s a huge constraint.

The third domain of Emotional Intelligence is Social Awareness. And a big part of Social Awareness is feeling empathy for others. We feel empathy when we open our ears and our hearts, and walk in the shoes of other people. We feel what they feel. This is easier said than done. When it comes to truly understanding the feelings of someone close to us, or just like us, we can score reasonably well.
Photo by Vladislav Klapin on Unsplash Today’s post is by author Amy L. Bernstein. When we talk about “pitch packages” in publishing, we’re usually talking about an author’s query letter and synopsis (for fiction), or a book proposal (for nonfiction). These are standard elements that every author, with a bit of research and consultation, can learn about and craft for themselves or, better still, with assistance from an editor or book coach.
