Hunter S. Thompson on being so loud they stop complaining about the noise.

Honey Copy

Hunter S. Thompson invented Gonzo Journalism, which he described as “first draft journalism” –– a rather oversimplified definition of a mode of writing that flipped journalism on its head. Before Hunter S. Thompson , journalists didn’t have opinions, they were never, under any circumstance, part of the story and they always presented their stories as a set of facts rather than feelings.

That Swipe File won’t make you a better writer. But, this will.

Honey Copy

I'm anti Swipe file. Here's why… Today, the "curator" is more appreciated than the "creator". This is splendid for "talking" about doing creative work. Less so for actually "doing" creative work that moves the culture forward, builds brands, challenges the conversation, etc. Just the other day, an online marketer with a huge following released a giant swipe file of advertisements.

"Your muscles will find the path of least resistance." For the past couple of weeks, I've been training with my girlfriend's bodyguard. He's ex-Special Forces. He's a black belt in something I can't pronounce. He weighs in at about 250-lbs and can pull double that from the floor as if it were nothing more than a moving box. Seven deadly adverbs you should cut from your writing

Grammar Underground

Adverbs aren’t just those -ly words that describe actions. They’re a broader class of words that includes “therefore,” “outside” and “tomorrow.” Any word that answers the question “where,” “when” or “in what manner” is probably an adverb. The “manner adverbs” we learned about in school are just a subset. When you want to know whether a word is an adverb, check a dictionary, skimming all its entries for each part of speech — noun, adjective, adverb — that applies.

I loathed Kanye West. Then, I watched Jeen-Yuhs. The documentary showed me another side of Kanye, a younger, gentler side that was just as ambitious as the artist is today but without all the rage and the hatred and the vindictiveness. Early on in his career, while Kanye still struggled with bouts of mania and narcissism, he was incredibly grounded; a groundedness that was in no small part due to his mother, Donda West.

You'll get drunk, stoned and high out of your mind just by reading Hunter S. Thompson's Daily Routine.

Honey Copy

Hunter S. Thompson is to journalism what Ernest Hemingway is to the written novel: there is journalism before Hunter S. Thompson and then, there is journalism after him. And, like Hemingway, Thompson’s reputation proceeded himself. This was in part because he himself was a larger-than-life character. But, also, because he had great difficulty separating himself from the larger-than-life character he portrayed in his writing.
